John Tukey's classic paper on graphic displays now posted

In the NEW section, John W. Tukey's classic paper "Some graphic and semigraphic displays" is now posted. It is worthwhile to go all the way through the paper, even though parts are written in the rich but sometimes cryptic language "Tukish".

The NEW section seems to be developing, slowly, a section on classic papers relevant to analytical design: Minard's work and life, Mosteller on classroom and platform performance, Hill on evidence for causality, and now Tukey on graphics. Two more Minard translations will appear in a few weeks.

The "hanging rootogram" (pages 313-315) is particularly clever, making good use of the general idea of comparing deviations off of a flat line rather off of a two-dimensional curve.

An interesting trivia regarding John Tukey:

When you mention the name Tukey to me (an engineer), my reaction is "Cooley-Tukey Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm." The FFT is a computer application which has had immense impact: Used in developing audio & image processing (all your CD's, music, equalizers, etc.), in engineering analysis software, vibration analysis, electrical spectra, computer modems...

I did not realize that in addition to co-developing w/ James Cooley a very efficient algorithm for taking discrete Fourier transforms, John Tukey had also written a classic paper on graphic displays!

(This is an answer to Hy D. Tran).

Tukey did a lot more than that! I was going to say he was the greatest statistician of all time, but then I remembered that statistics has attracted more than its fair share of brilliant thinkers, so make it the greatest statistician of modern times. Quite apart from the originality of his thinking, he wrote in a style that makes his ideas easily accessible to non-mathematicians.
